Student Indexing
Upon admission to a training school, for all nursing and midwifery programmes, we require students to submit an application for Indexing within 60 days following commencement of training. Applications for Indexing are made using the Council’s Online Services Portal. Your training institution will guide you on how to complete your application.
The Council through its Indexing Section verifies submissions to ensure that students admitted to training schools meet the minimum admission criteria for their programme of choice. Once verification is completed, you will be assigned an ‘Index Number’ which is a unique reference that will remain your identification throughout training and practice. The outcome of the indexing process will be communicated to you through your training institution, SMS and email notifications.
We will utilize your indexing details to track your progress through training and determine your eligibility to sit the Council’s licensing examination. Students who have not submitted themselves to the Indexing Process are not acknowledged by the Council and not eligible to study or practice nursing or midwifery in Kenya.

Examinations
The Council is responsible for ensuring that all nurses and midwives within its jurisdiction meet an acceptable level of competence before they begin to practice. This level of competence is measured partly by our licensing exam.
The licensing examination is administered through regional examination centers. It consists of 4 individual papers for basic cadres and 3 papers for other cadres. Each paper examines specific competencies expected of nurses practicing within that capacity and is administered over the course of three hours. Papers comprise multiple-choice questions, short answer questions and long answer questions where the candidate is expected to respond to brief health-care scenarios.
We determine applicants’ eligibility to write the exam by evaluating their conduct, academic and practical progress at the training school. Candidates are allowed a maximum of 4 resits and must satisfy the Board of Examiners for each of the papers before they are eligible to apply for enrollment/registration and licensing.
