Risk management workshop

The Nursing Council of Kenya’s senior management and risk champions attended a 5-day Risk Management Workshop facilitated by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) at the Astorian Grand Hotel in Naivasha.

The Risk Management Workshop took the senior management and risk champions through a risk management process which entailed:identification, assessment, mitigation, monitoring and reporting of risks.

The Registrar/CEO Ms. Edna Tallam, while giving her remarks, noted that it is important for the NCK to know the root cause of its risks, to help it mitigate them. “This is an exciting exercise for the Council because it will clear way to where we want to take the NCK. We have noted it is important to bring the administrators because sensitization workshops are important.

There is need for us to familiarize with policies and hold sessions for sensitization with our colleagues and the incoming Board from what we have learnt,” she said. Risk management is the responsibility of everyone and parties in the Risk Management system should play their individual roles effectively.

The risk champions under the guidance of ICPAK facilitators, developed risk registers for their various departments which was later consolidated into one risk register for the NCK. Risk management is important for NCK because there are proactive processes of mitigating risks before they happen as opposed to reactive mitigation to risks. The risk champions will report to the Head of Departments, who are the risk owners and by extension, members of the Risk Management Committee that reviews risks the NCK is facing before presenting them to Audit and Risk Committee.

The Audit and Risk Management Committee supports the Board to achieve its fiduciary role by ensuring that it maintains an effective risk management process and follow up on all major risks.

The Board sets objectives and determines the Risk Management strategy. It sets the tone at the top and establishes the control environment, determines the risk appetite of the NCK, its strategic direction and monitoring.
